Haemochromatosis is a genetic condition where the body absorbs and stores more iron than usual. Over time, having too much iron in the body can lead to serious health problems. The reason why some people with haemochromatosis are told to avoid taking a vitamin C supplement is that vitamin C increases the absorption of the type of iron found in plant foods, called non-haem iron, which increases the amount of iron in the body.
If you currently take a multivitamin or any other supplement, speak to your GP about how these may interact with your condition and whether or not you should continue taking them. For the majority of people, consuming a healthy balanced diet gives them all the nutrition their body needs so there is generally no need to be taking additional supplements.
