The latest dietary guidelines recommend the daily intake of foods from the meat and meat alternatives group to equal 1 serve for children aged 2-3 years, 1 ½ serves for children aged 4-8 years and 2 ½ serves for children aged 9 and over. A serving size of food from this group is equal to 65g cooked red meat, 80g cooked chicken, 100g cooked fish, 2 large eggs, or 1 cup of legumes/beans.
It is important to choose good quality, lean meats and eat a variety of foods from this group. Encourage your kids to eat fish and legumes from an early age and they are more likely to continue eating these healthy foods as adults. More information about the nutrition requirements for children can be found on the Eat for Health website www.eatforhealth.gov.au
